A Boutique Experience amongst Liverpool’s Hotels - Hope Street Hotel

A Boutique Experience amongst Liverpool’s Hotels  -  Hope Street Hotel

As a creative city, confirmed by its status as 2008 European City of Culture, you would expect Liverpool to have some pretty cool places to bed down.  After all, we’re talking about the birthplace of the Beatles, the home of two of England’s premier football teams, the hub of a thriving film, music and television industry and outpost of London’s Tate Art Gallery.

It was a well-judged move by the young, entrepreneurial owners of the eponymously named Hope Street Hotel to open a boutique hotel that is as serious about design as it is about offering a friendly, professional service.  Hope Street is one of only a handful of hotels in the UK (and one of only two in the north) to be invited to join the elite international Design Hotel group.

Poised midway between Liverpool’s two great cathedrals, in the city’s cultural quarter, and stepping distance from the revamped docks, Hope Street Hotel is a converted Victorian coachworks masquerading as a Venetian palazzo.  So, think an imposingly decorated frontage and masses of airy spaces inside.

Original features  -  exposed brickwork, cast iron pillars, lofty windows  -  have been softened with luxurious, natural materials.  The 48 rooms soothe with birch wood flooring, cherry wood and leather furnishings while the king-size beds are covered with cool white Egyptian cotton.  In-room entertainment systems are sleek and modern while bathrooms are crisp design statements of granite, slate and Arne Jacobsen taps. Minimalist and unfussy but comfortable in all the right places.

For that real boutique experience, try one of the fourth floor suites.  Highly individual spaces  -  some with mezzanines  -  with beams and quirky shapes, they spoil with Bang & Olufsen sound systems and spectacular rooftop views across the city.

Dozens of good bars, pubs and restaurants are within easy strolling distance but a night in at the hotel’s own restaurant, The London Carriage Works (the title comes from the building’s original name) shouldn’t disappoint.  Winner of Taste of England Northwest 2008, it serves modern and inventive bistro food with a strong emphasis on regional and seasonal sourcing.  Perhaps go for scallops with cauliflower purée and black and white pudding followed by slow-cooked Cumbrian beef and oyster pie.  Puddings are deliciously retro while the lengthy cheese menu celebrates British artisan cheese-makers.  Or you could just nibble on a sharing plate of cheeses while chilling out in the next-door bar with its great beers and crafty cocktails.

Stay in or go out, frankly it’s a tough choice
